Almost everyone can sing. Whether it’s humming along to your favourite streaming service, supporting your team from the terraces, on your own in the shower, or part of an organised group, singing comes naturally to virtually everyone. But did you know that singing is really good for your health?
Over the last few years many academic research projects have been undertaken by universities and research establishments around the world. These reveal that choral singing can provide significant benefits in the areas of:
· improving physical health – enhances lung function, stimulates immune responses, increases pain thresholds; lowers blood pressure;
· improving mental health – relieves stress, improves mood, helps with grief, faster recovery from depression, makes you feel good about yourself;
· improving social interaction – helps build connections and feelings of togetherness, helps you express yourself, boosts your confidence, opportunity to make new friends
· improving speaking ability – enhances speaking for people with autism, Parkinson Disease, aphasia (after a stroke), and stuttering; also enhances memory for those with dementia.
If you want to look at the detailed research just Google ‘benefits of singing’ and this will lead you to many published papers. The benefits of choral singing are so strong that the NHS has been prescribing community choirs to patients since 2018, and the really great thing is that you don’t need to be good at it to reap the rewards.
Barnt Green Choral Society is a Registered Charity based near Bromsgrove dedicated to the promotion of choral singing for the benefit of the local community. We run an adult mixed-voice choir of approximately 60 singers, comprising all backgrounds and abilities, led by professional musicians. We perform three concerts per year which include a wide variety of popular modern songs, Christmas songs and carols, and choral classics. The emphasis is on singing to the best of our ability whilst at the same time having a great deal of fun.
Anyone can join. New faces are always welcome and you don’t need to have experience of choral singing or be able to read music. We meet on Monday evenings (7.45 pm to 9.45 pm) September to June at the Parish Centre, Sandhills Road, Barnt Green, B45 8NR. You can come to a few of our meetings before deciding if you want to join us. To find out more please come along to one of our Monday sessions or email info@barntgreenchoralsociety.org
